Dissed

After having been in DC for a bit now I'm still surprised (somewhat) at how people avoid eye contact and avoid saying hello to each other on the street. Some people are bound and determined not to acknowledge your existence.

Yesterday I experienced the biggest slam on this front yet.

I was walking home from work (9 blocks). I was coming up on a young woman who looked like she was really nice. She seemed happy, was smiling, had a bounce in her step. I thought, "This will be great...I'll say hello and she'll smile and be friendly spreading some of that good cheer."

Well, as you can tell by the title of this post this is not what happened. She wasn't mean; she didn't snap at me. Nope, she completely ignored me. So I was left trying to make eye contact only to be shot down. It's like when you go to give someone a five and they leave you hanging. This wasn't the worst part of the encounter though.

As we passed I noticed that there was a puppy sitting out on the stoop of a house close by. After we passed and she completely ignored me I heard a sound so I turned only to see that she was looking with a smile at the puppy. She was looking at it like, "awe, you are a cute little creature." And guess what she said. "Hello puppy"

What!? What is it about humans that they will ignore the existence of other humans...yet they will look at a puppy and say hello.

That's messed up!

Intimidation in the Bathroom!

Here's another pic from our trip to Jackson, MS. I wouldn't want to be considered a "theological girlie man" but I also wouldn't want to claim that I'm a "theological giant" either. Needless to say I won't be putting a sign like this on my bathroom any time soon. I think that Ligon Duncan deserves to have this on the bathroom in his office;^) Between Derek Thomas and him I bet no one else would dare use this lavatory!

A Play on Words?

This is a very delinquent post, but here is a picture of a sign we saw when we were down in Jackson, MS in November of '07.

Hory Fog???

Before I get posting on the series I started a long time ago I thought I would post this.

Over Christmas when we were in Iowa we were driving on I-80 between Des Moines and Davenport and Lindsey's mom said something to the extent of, "Look at the beautiful hory (sp?) fog." Eric (Lindsey's bro), Lindsey and I looked at each other with confusion, "Did she just say 'hory'?" Well, after looking on the internet I am convinced that this is an adjective from the Newman family only (I looked up hory, horey, horry, horrey, whory, whorey, whorry, whorrey, etc.). If you can help me with the spelling of this elusive word that would be great.

Anyway, as we counted over 135 cars in the ditch between Des Moines and Davenport we all thought, "Yeah, it is pretty." Actually, it was very pretty. The fog left a thin layer of frost on all the trees. Little did Lindsey and I know that this catch phrase of Christmas weekend, "hory mist", was a design of God to slow us down the following weekend!

Fast forward to the following weekend. Lindsey and I went down to Maryville, Missouri for Christmas with my mom's side of the family. It was excellent! Upon our return home we learned that the next day's forecast, when Linds and I were planning to drive the 26 foot U-haul truck with all our earthly possessions to Washington D.C., was predicting snow storms in the evening. We were a little bummed, but decided to try to get to Champaign, Illinois to clip off about 6 or so hours of our 18ish hour trip. So we left at approximately 10:00pm.

Well, as we were about an hour into our journey we encountered the elusive "hory fog". It was really not a good situation. We could see only two checkered lines in front of us on the interstate, and we couldn't read the signs once we were passed Williamsburg, Iowa. I couldn't even see the exit for Iowa City, or the I-80 truck stop, the self-proclaimed largest truck stop in the world. So Lindsey and I decided to stop in Bettendorf to stay with her grandma...by this time it was about 2:30am. God was gracious to us in fact that Lindsey had a wireless card for her laptop...at the exit we turned on we were able to read a sign of a business...and from that address on Lindsey's computer we were able to get directions to her grandmother's. We arrived there around 3:00am. God has been gracious to give us a grandmother that is more than hospitable to let us crash there on such short notice at the earliest time you could imagine. Below are a few pictures of the effects of the "hory fog" on our truck. These pics are from the morning after...but you can see how the "fog" was completely freezing our truck over.

In case you didn't know David Hasselhoff is huge in Germany and believe it or not this is legit music video he did there. Thanks for the tip Nathan!

Well, I'm going to turn in for the night...and I thought I'd post a pic of the new chair we purchased last weekend. It reclines too! It's perfect for reading...and better support for my back while studying...

"Monkey-Wolf"

Well, Lindsey and I were eating dinner with my parents on Tuesday, and we were talking about my mom's first day back to school [she's an elementary music teacher]. 

Anyhow, in music class with the youngest students you usually sing things with the solfege "sol, mi, sol sol, mi" to build tension and then resolve to "doh" eventually.  This starts to train the kids, without their knowledge, about melody...etc. 

So they would sing about something that they saw in the Summer...they got to one kid and he sang "I saw a monkey wolf." [Or something like that.]  They stopped and my mom asked him to explain.  Well, he described a creature that drags children off [and I would assume eats them].  Mom correct me if I'm wrong:)

Well, we were all laughing thinking this had to be a campfire story...well I found out that there is such a think as a "Wolf Monkey" [the words are flipped around, but it could be the same thing].  But I doubt this thing eats young children.

Television Show "24"

This show is downright intense. Lindsey and I borrowed the first season from the Dyvigs and 16 hours later we don't quite know what to think. It was good, but since we're at a good stopping point I don't really care to watch 32 more hours to get caught up with the most current season. If you watch it from week to week I'm sure it's fun though. It's just way too addictive for such large amounts of time.

The show is very well done...it's really fairly believable and the special effects and acting are pretty good. The pictures below are the only scene that had a flaw [That I saw]...I'll add commentary to help:) BTW...I'm making up the commentary:)

Jack: "I know those dirty rotten terrorists are around here somewhere. There were a total of seven and I've killed five so I know it's just us three...where could those other two be!?"



Jack: "Wait, what's that??...I sense something!"



Jack: "Nothing here...at 3 o'clock to my right..."



Jack: "Nothing there...at 1 o'clock to my right..."



Set Crew Guy with a clear face shield and blue top on his head [Whispering]: "Jack the two terrorists are on the next dock. Look to 12 o'clock in front of you"

Jack: "AHHHH!!!!! [Thinking 2 things at the same time (1) Where did that guy come from? (2) The terrorists are at 12 o'clock!]"



Jack: "Take That!!!!!"



Two Terrorists: "Dang it...the set crew gave us away again!"



Jack: "Whew...wait a minute...where'd that guy go?? He must have been an angel...I'll just keep shooting!"

Sorry if I gave anything away:) I just thought it was funny that the set crew guy was in the scene! Maybe he was supposed to be an angel?? You never know...the writers of this show are pretty unpredictable. They certainly boast that:)
